2022 Summer Camp FAQs

We appreciate your patience as we have diligently worked to address FAQs related to COVID-19 procedures at camp. If you have additional questions/concerns, please feel free to contact us at info@campoakhill.org.

IN LIGHT OF COVID-19, HOW WILL THE CAMP OAK HILL EXPERIENCE BE DIFFERENT THIS SUMMER?

Based on the most recent recommendations by the ACA, CDC, NCDHHS and our Camp Physician, camp will not be restricting interaction as we have the past couple of years.  With a few exceptions, the vast majority of our activities will take place outdoors to continue to allow proper ventilation.

WHAT IS YOUR COVID-19 PLAN?

Per ACA, CDC, NCDHHS and our Camp Physician’s recommendations, our staff/counselors will be tested before the beginning of camp.  Those that are symptomatic will be quarantined and tested to ensure minimal risk to anyone else.  Staff/Counselors will be required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival at camp.

Hand sanitizer stations will be strategically placed throughout camp, water fountains are closed and water stations will provide individual disposable cups for each camper and staff.

Masks will not be required, however campers who choose to wear one are welcome to do so and we will have some masks available for those campers who request one.  Exceptions to this are the following:

  • Any camp-wide activities that are held indoors as one large group. (For example, if camp has to assemble in the gym due to rainy weather, masks will be provided and be worn.) Masks are not required when in your cabin group nor when eating.
  • Anyone who is symptomatic will be asked to immediately place a mask on until they can be quarantined and tested. Counselors who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 will be quarantined for 5 days and will be required to wear a face mask for 5 additional days after testing negative.
  • Kitchen staff will be required to wear a face mask, apron and gloves at all times when preparing and serving food.

WHAT PAPERWORK IS NEEDED BEFORE ARRIVAL?

We are requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken 1-3 days prior to the arrival of the child before we can allow you to drop your child off for camp, regardless of vaccination status. At this point, an over the counter COVID-19 test result will suffice. To provide proof of negative results, simply provide us a photo taken of the negative test results, with the camper’s name and date of test in the picture.  If you already have proof of vaccination, please consider emailing that to medical@campoakhill.org ahead of time or present it during check-in.

It is also recommended that parents submit a second over the counter COVID test to the infirmary during check-in. Currently, if a camper becomes symptomatic during the week, they are isolated in the infirmary and parents will need to come pick their child up. If you submit a COVID test with the infirmary and your child becomes symptomatic, the infirmary staff will contact you, confirm approval to administer this test to your child and hopefully there will be no need to come pick up your child.

We no longer require a 2 week health log as we have the past two years. However, we will be conducting temperature checks upon arrival.

HOW WILL MEALS WORK THIS SUMMER?

Campers will continue to wash their hands at our handwashing stations prior to entering the dining hall.

Meals will be eaten outside on picnic tables to avoid unnecessary contamination, as weather permits.  If the weather is unsuitable for eating outside, the dining hall will be utilized.

Cabin groups will eat together daily and share meal times however a maximum of 8 campers will be served per table.  Campers will be served in a line by kitchen staff wearing masks, aprons and gloves. Our dining hall sanitation will continue to be enhanced this year to include thorough cleaning between meals as it has the past two years.

WHAT IF MY CHILD GETS SICK WHILE AT CAMP?

As is our normal procedure, we will have at least two registered nurses at camp at all times. We will also be working closely with our camp physician and the Granville County Health Department to execute a plan that protects our community should one of our campers get sick in any way while they are at camp. This includes fever, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, nasal congestion, respiratory symptoms, and anything otherwise presenting as something that could potentially be contagious.  If it is suspected that a camper is showing symptoms of possible COVID-19, the parents will be called and asked that the child be picked up from camp.

If campers are believed to be displaying COVID-19 symptoms, he/she will be quarantined in a special lodging area onsite and will be required to wear a face mask at all times. Their parents will be notified immediately and will need to pick up their camper within twenty-four hours.  Upon a positive COVID-19 result at camp, we will notify the Granville County Department of Health immediately.

WHAT HAPPENS IF SOMEONE IN MY CHILD’S CABIN TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19?

Although we pray this does not occur, we are well-prepared in the event that someone at Camp Oak Hill tests positive for COVID-19. If that happens, we will follow the steps detailed above for sick campers. In addition, their entire cabin would be quarantined as well and all parents within that cabin will be notified immediately. Parents can choose to come get their camper or leave them in quarantine for the remainder of their session. A quarantined cabin will be monitored for health and safety and will not be allowed to interact with any other campers onsite. Meals will be delivered to their cabin and camp staff will communicate with parents daily until closing day. Cabins will still be able to participate in camp activities on a revised schedule.
